New Year’s Margarita

A deliciously fruity and frosty New Year’s margarita, perfect for all special celebrations!

When it comes to Champagne, SoupAddict can take it or leave it (this makes sense: SoupAddict doesn’t like bitter things. Coffee, beer, wine — nope! Mochas, Mt. Dew, amaretto sours — yes, please.

If she must drink something grapey and bubbly, and if she must be happy about it, is must be Moscato d’Asti. Which no one ever has on hand. Ever.

So, for celebrations, SoupAddict shuns the bubbly altogether, and turns instead to the frozen Margarita: slushy and slightly sweet — absolutely up SoupAddict’s alley.

Corazon Reposado Tequila and Grand Marnier, for New Year's Margaritas

For everyday margaritas, SoupAddict usually sticks to Jose Cuervo, but for special celebrations, she likes to try something closer to the top shelf. Corazon de Agave. “Heart of the agave plant.” Lovely. (Plus, she totally fell for the packaging.)

And, importantly, Grand Marnier, the magnificent orange liqueur that will make the New Year’s margarita extra special.

Blending up frosty New Year's Margaritas

SoupAddict is making a half batch here, because it’s 2:00 in the afternoon on the day before New Year’s Eve, and there are miles to go before she sleeps (and being the wimpiest light-weight ever, even one glass will have her sleepy and grinny).

The light coming through the window was just right and begged for things to be photographed.

SoupAddict is a sipper, and prefers just a touch of salt on the rim.

Mmmm, perfection. SoupAddict will not be driving after the celebration, so she plans on having two of these (and loads of these cheesy Gougères).

That’s why SoupAddict loves having home field advantage for such celebrations. Eat, drink, be merry. Snuggle under the blankies at 12:05am, wonderfully drowsy and grateful for another year in the books, with mascara still on.

Happy New Year, Everyone! Here’s to a happy, healthy, peaceful 2010!

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces Frozen limeade (if you can only find a 12 oz can, let the can defrost a bit, and it will be easy to scoop out the frozen goodness. Or, make a double-batch. SoupAddict won't tell)
  • 3 fluid ounces Tequila (get the good stuff; 2010 only comes around once, that's SoupAddict's philosophy)
  • 1 fluid ounce Grand Marnier
  • splash Fresh orange juice
  • splash Fresh lime juice
  • Crushed ice (or, if your blender has an ice crusher setting, then ice cubes will do just fine)

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth and thick.

Notes

*SoupAddict realizes you might be thinking limeade? SoupAddict was likewise skeptical the first time she heard of this, but now much prefers it over a mix. The fact that it's frozen is also a benefit, in SoupAddict's eyes, as it helps the ice stay, well, icy.

That looks so good, I'm a big fan of margaritas. What would be an alternative for limeade? I live in New Zealand and I don't think we have that stuff...

Hi Hannah, Limeade is simply limes, sugar and water. If you google "limeade recipe," you should get links to several recipes. After you mix up the limeade, you'll want to put it in the freezer and keep an eye on it so that it gets slushy, but doesn't freeze solid. Then you'll be good to go with this margarita. Thanks for visiting!
