When I want to try a new variety, I buy garlic from http://www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/ . Their web site looks a little hinky, but they have realtionships with good growers. All the garlic you see above originated with this site. Do order now, though, or you might not get the varieties you want. Also, if you have farmers markets in your area, check them out. You can absolutely plant bulbs that you purchase from them.

What a beautiful harvest! I wanted to plant some last year, but all the suppliers were out in Sept. when I was hunting. Even now, mid-June some sources are sold out. :( The search will continue. :) Enjoy your bounty!

;) Especially not with this super-hot weather we're having - I have to finish curing the garlic in the basement where it's cool. (Fortunately, they're mostly set, so there's just the faintest whiff as you descend the stairs - like an Italian restaurant.)

Oh, garlic envy :-) One of my co-workers plants over 400 heads of garlic every year (5-6 varieties) - I am jealous of her too. Equal opportunity jealousy and all that...

I bet there are no vampire sitings at Casa Soup Addict!

Yes and no. For me, it's less of an issue of a distinct flavor, but rather distinct qualities, in a more general sense. Like, some garlics are mild, some are hot (and some are !HOT!). But if you put a blind-fold on me and had me taste 2 mild varieties, I probably couldn't tell which is which.

Some roast beautifully (actually, all roast beautifully, but with some, there's just an extra bit of magic ... as with the Chesnok Reds). Some store better than others. I choose varieties based on these qualities, rather than on taste (since they're all pretty terrific - I've never come across a flavor dud).

Your friend must've had a blast doing that. I bet he babies those bulbs now (I know I would!)

I had no idea. A friend created his own hybrid garlic over the years and he was so proud and we were all happy to be gifted with some bulbs. Honestly, I can't tell the difference from one to the next. Can you? Is there a distinct or different taste between varieties?
