Seasonal Soups to Cook in September

September is a special month for me here on the blog because it’s both my blogiversary and the official start of soup season. As a soup aficionado, soup season is all year-round, so I thought I’d change things up this month and share my personal top 10 favorite soups from my 18 years here on the blog. Anything goes in this list, but knowing me as I do, you can bet it’s going to be thick and hearty comfort food at its best. I hope you’ll enjoy this special edition of my Seasonal Soups to Cook in September!

Karen’s All-time Favorite Soups

In no particular order — because they’re all my favorites! — here are the ten soups that I would never want to live without! I hope you enjoy them, too.

A bowl of Hungarian Mushroom Soup on a wooden board with a side of bread.
Cook time: 25 minutes
This Hungarian Mushroom Soup is pure delicious comfort food in a bowl. My version of a family recipe, inspired by my grandmother's time in Hungary, combines plenty of mushrooms with traditional Hungarian seasonings like dill and paprika, plus a splash of sherry for complexity. The result is a creamy, restaurant-quality soup that's simple to make at home.

Cook time: 35 minutes
Jambalaya in soup form might not be exactly traditional, but it’s pure go-to comfort food here at Casa SoupAddict. Savory chicken, andouille sausage, and shrimp, cooked in a rich broth that’s steeped in aromatic vegetables, herbs, and Creole seasonings.

Cook time: 20 minutes
Potstickers are having a moment on social media, but I've been making this soup on the blog for ages now. It's both a family and a reader favorite, and its savory, Asian-leaning flavors just couldn't be more irresistible.

Cook time: 30 minutes
This is it. This is the one: my all-time favorite soup. I already love chicken soup beyond all sensibility, and the infusion of curry flavors and creamy coconut milk sends this one right over the top. I'm not alone in my affection: It's been in my top 3 most googled soups for years.

Cook time: 45 minutes
This is a practically ancient family recipe — 50 years now, maybe? — concocted by mom, adored by my sibs, and faithfully reproduced by yours truly. I just love this soup so much. It's got chicken and pasta and mushrooms and loads of chili seasonings. It's the soup I love to load up into a big mug and curl up on the couch with to rewatch a favorite movie.

Thai Red Curry Dumpling Soup in a white bowl.
Cook time: 20 minutes
One trend you'll notice pretty quickly in this list is that I love carbs in my soup. Pasta, rice, barley, potatoes — it's all good. This soup has lots of stuffed dumplings in a lightly creamy broth, seasoned with ginger, lemongrass, and — my favorite thing — a Thai red curry paste base.

Cook time: 20 minutes
This soup recipe has really stood the test of time, with over a decade on the blog. It was one of my first wildly viral (so to speak lol) soups that's been stolen by name over and over again by other bloggers. I made it on a whim, when a particularly stubborn cold was wearing me down. I threw every remedy I had at the soup — ginger, garlic, lemongrass, turmeric — even eschewing slurpy noodles for easier-to-manage pearl couscous, and it ended up so much more than I could've hoped. Chicken soup has that magical quality that just makes everything feel better.

Cook time: 45 minutes
Tortellini is probably my favorite soup pasta, and I bet I have a dozen or so tortellini soups on the blog at this point. Paired with Italian sausage, it's just :chef's kiss: and a creamy tomato base with lots of herby seasonings is the soup that keeps me hanging on through the dreary late winter months.

Cook time: 25 minutes
Here's a twist on traditional white chicken chili that brings serious Southwest vibes to your bowl. Southwest White Chicken Chili recipe brings authentic Tex-Mex flavors to your dinner table with tender rotisserie chicken, creamy white beans, zesty green chiles, and tangy salsa verde. The thickening power of masa harina and pureed beans also creates layers of yum that'll have everyone asking for seconds.

Marry Me Sausage Orzo Soup in a large Dutch oven.
Cook time: 40 minutes
This hearty is inspired by the famous creamy Tuscan seasoned sauce, but features savory Italian sausage and plenty of orzo pasta for a cozy and satisfying meal. Marry Me Sausage Orzo Soup is a dish that's easy to love and commit to.
